Friends!
We’re so close to April, I can taste it. (Siri, play “April Come She Will” by Simon & Garfunkel!) I love that I can return to Dish posts from earlier years and see the same feelings reflected back at me: March angst, April relief. Life is so circular, and April really is one of the best months to live in New York City. We emerge from our apartments; we migrate to the closest park; we bask in the sun, greedy for light, even if still wearing our sweaters. It’s the season of cherry blossoms and hibiscus sodas, long evenings and Mister Softee cones. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: sometimes, it’s so easy to love New York.
However! April’s my last month in the city for a little while, because I’m heading to Fishers Island, New York for the summer. From May until September, I’ll be living an island life, helping my friend Lily run her café, The West End (website coming back soon!). Lily is an alumna of Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland, the same school I attended, and has become a good friend of mine. Over the past few years, Lily has built a wonderful business and community gathering place. There, she serves nourishing breakfasts and lunches, inspired by Ballymaloe’s ethos, along with perfect Parlor coffee and Sweet Grass milk. Also: retail goods and prepared foods, the latter of which I’ll be taking the lead on. I’m excited! I’ll get to leave the city on a high note at the beginning of May and return in early September with new energy.
I’m also happy to share that we hit 500 subscribers last week! Thank you all so much for being here.
In honor of this milestone, I’m offering a 40% discount on paid subscriptions to The Dish from now until the end of April. I’d love to have more of you join the paid subscriber community. And please feel free to share with any friends who might like to join us.
Now, let’s end the month with a list of links.
March links!
My friend Devra will be at Archestratus (Greenpoint, Brooklyn) on April 4th for a special event to celebrate her new cookbook, The Jewish Holiday Table. Devra is very smart and wonderful. Join me!
My bestie Eliza called me this morning with an urgent question: “Do I get Light Blue instead of Sand?” She was referring to the Ona Soft Bag from Ölend, a Spanish company. Eliza and I are always copying each other’s style, and I suspect it won’t be long until I order myself an Ona — in my own shade, of course.
I loved this Cup of Jo post about the power and beauty of people, particularly parents, witnessing your life. Sob!
Clare de Boer’s Easter spread came out in the New York Times, and it’s delightful. (I got to test the recipes for her! The salad’s bacon fat vinaigrette is a revelation.)
At long last, Hart’s has hats, and they’re so cute.
Hot tip: Resy has an editorial platform with very good, up-to-date NYC restaurant recommendations. I particularly love the monthly Staff Picks series. Here’s the March edition!
Speaking of NYC restaurants, Cecily, Tolo, and Bangkok Supper Club are at the top of my list.
Love you all!
Phoebe
WOOHOOO!!! 5 hundred!!!
March angst, April relief is SO real. Excited to hear your stories from the island!
